Bennett Community School Sick or Exposed Student Requirements
(As of 8-25-2020) COVID-19 is a new disease, caused by a novel (or new) coronavirus that has not been previously seen in humans. The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads mainly from person-to-person.
Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms. People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.
Bennett Elementary will be adhering to the guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health and Iowa Department of Education when evaluating ill students in the nurses’ office. The Guidance is as follows:

IDENTIFYING CLOSE CONTACTS FOR COVID-19

Students who have been in close contact with a Covid-19 positive individual (within 6 feet of a positive person for more than 15 minutes) will need to stay home and quarantine for 14 days and monitor for symptoms. (Examples: mother, father, siblings, church, school, sports activities, etc.)
If no symptoms develop, students can return to school 14 days from their last contact with the Covid-19 positive individual. Please keep in mind that quarantine can last longer than 14 days depending on circumstances.
If symptoms develop, students should be evaluated by a health care provider
If a student tests positive for COVID-19, they should isolate for 10 days
If a student tests negative for COVID-19, they must still complete their 14-day quarantine before returning to school.

*CEDAR County Public Health and/or the school nurse will determine a return to learn date for your student whether they are isolating or in quarantine.
